single currency
   The euro, the currency in operation in 12 countries of the European Union but not Denmark, Sweden, the United Kingdom or the ten new entrants, some of which are planning for its early use. A timetable for the introduction of a single currency was laid down in the Maastricht Treaty. Britain opted out of the single currency, which was originally to be called the ecu but which has been known as the euro since the Madrid summit of December 1995. It was introduced in 1999 by 11 countries, Greece joining in 2002 at the time when euro notes and coins became the sole currency in use in the ‘eurozone’, sometimes known as ‘euroland’.
